Battle of the Riffs is Modern Metal Academy’s monthly songwriting and riff-writing challenge. Members submit original riffs based on a specific theme or musical concept, and selected entries receive feedback, recognition, and prizes.
This article explains how to participate and submit your entry.
1. Check the Monthly Theme
Each month has a new theme, such as:
Writing in a specific mode (e.g., Lydian, Dorian, Mixolydian)
Using chord tone targeting
A rhythmic concept
A creative songwriting challenge
The theme is announced in:
The Members Lounge
The monthly Battle of the Riffs post
Via Email to you
Make sure you read the theme and any specific guidelines before recording your entry.
2. Write and Record Your Riff
Your submission can be recorded in any format, including:
A full mix wth drums, bass and production
A guitar-only audio clip
As long as the song is clear and matches the monthly theme, the format is flexible.
3. Upload Your Submission
You can submit your songs directly into the Battle of the Riffs section in workshops.

Upload your song by filling out the form and attaching:
An audio file
(optional) a link to a playthrough of your song
Add a short description if needed depending on the brief (like for example, if we say write in a reltive mode, tell us which modes you selected).
4. Submission Deadline
Each month has a submission deadline listed in the announcement post.
Late submissions will not be included in the livestream or prize selection for that month.
5. Feedback and Recognition
All ssubmissions are featured during the winner announcement livestream where songs are:
Reviewed
Given constructive feedback
Highlighted for creativity, tone, or execution
Some entries are awarded honourable mentions, and two songs are voted as the monthly winners.

Ignite members
Masters members
All members are encouraged to participate, regardless of experience level.
